In 1858, during a US Senate race in the state of Illinois Stephen Douglas was continuing his path to the presidency by defending his seat against Abraham Lincoln. Douglas was a member of the Democratic Party and Lincoln, a Republican. Ironically, the main issues were slavery and race including the legitimacy of the Dred Scott decision and the spread of slavery into the newly acquired territories in the southwest. There were a series of seven debates that took place in the following cities: Ottawa, Freeport, Jonesboro, Charleston, Galesburg, Quincy, Alton; all between August and October of 1858. John Brown, a radical abolitionist from Ohio who during the early 1850’s led a group against proslavery settlers in Kansas, led another interracial army (2 of his soldiers were his own sons) in an attempt to capture a federal arsenal with the hopes of inspiring slaves to rebellion. Brown spent three years planning his revolt and believed his “army” could take enough weapons to arm slaves and establish mountain bases for a black revolutionary republic which would serve as a place of refuge and a rallying point for subsequent slave insurgencies in the South.
