In 1943, Abraham Maslow argued that all humans subscribe to a specific set of needs that affect self-actualization. Arranging the needs in a pyramid, he theorized that in order to reach the pinnacle of self-actualization (self-improvement), humans need to have other basic needs taken care of first.
