Constraints & Powers of the Legislative Branch

Credit: ncsl.org

The legislative branch does not work in a vacuum. Instead, Congress crafts legislation with the full knowledge that the other two branches of government have the ability to limit the power of the legislative branch. However, checks and balances are a two-way street: the U.S. Constitution also delegates powers to the legislative branch to limit the powers of the judiciary and executive branches. Understanding these checks and balances is important from a constitutional perspective. It also gives you some insight into the constraints that members of the House and Senate are cognizant of as they go about the process of constructing public policy. Continue reading

Impact of Media on Public Policy Debate

Credit: york.ac.uk

There are more media choices available today to ordinary citizens than ever before. In fact, in the United States and in many other nations, citizens are dramatically decreasing the amount of time spent consuming news through traditional media, such as nightly news broadcasts and daily newspapers. Instead, citizens are dramatically increasing the amount of time spent on a vast array of alternative news resources. Therefore, media outlets—whether on television, in print, or on the Internet—need to digest often-complex policy issues into small snippets that can be understood and communicated in a short amount of time.

Women’s Reproductive Rights

Reproductive rights remain a controversial issue, not only in the United States, but in many countries around the world. Although formal laws address this issue at the federal and state levels, it would be shortsighted to view this conversation as occurring only within the hallways of government. In fact, perhaps no issue has galvanized more stakeholders in recent times than reproductive rights. Institutions, religious groups, grassroots organizations, women’s rights organizations, and international bodies such as the United Nations have weighed in on reproductive rights around the world. Balanced Federal Budgets

Economists differ in their ideas about using government spending to stimulate the economy. Some economists follow British political-economist John Maynard Keynes in advocating increased government expenditure to stimulate the economy when it is in recession. In their view, the federal deficit will decline when the economy improves. Others favor allowing market forces to restore equilibrium when the economy is in recession. They believe that the deficit stifles economic growth and prosperity. Continue reading

Legalization of Marijuana

Substance abusers are more likely to commit crimes, be arrested, serve time in prison, and re-offend. They are a considerable burden on the justice system, and the problem of substance abuse continues to grow. Why are some states choosing to legalize recreational marijuana, and what effects are being seen from this legalization? What do you believe are potential pitfalls of such legalization given the current rates of rising addiction, and recent research identifying unintended consequences? Continue reading

African Americans and the Healthcare System

Credit: seniorhousingnews.com

There are many studies that reveal that blacks generally mistrust the healthcare system, receive a lower quality of care, and use fewer medical services in general than whites (Dayer-Berenson, 2014).  A nurse at a public health clinic reads statistics that the local hospital has seen an increase in the number of emergency center visits among those in the black/African American community. She also notices that there has been a decrease in the number of black/African American patients visiting the public health clinic, and when black/African American patients do show up to the clinic, they are reluctant to talk about their health care conditions. Cocacola vs Pepsi

Decide on a company to invest in and a company in the same industry to compare against your investment company.  Create your group’s company thread.  Click on Create Thread and then list your primary company and comparison company in the subject line.  You will reply to this thread for all future posts.  Only one member of your group will create this group thread.  Example:  Based on the above example of Home Depot vs.   Lowes, your group’s initial thread subject line would read Home Depot vs.   Lowes.  Once you have identified your investment and comparison companies, record them on the board.  The first group who records the companies on the board is the group that can use the companies for their project.  No two groups can use the same companies for this project.   Continue reading
