The Legislative Branch in Action

Credit: slideshare.net

The senators and representatives who make up the legislative branch each have different agendas, priorities, and policy initiatives that they wish to usher through the public policy process. It is clearly not easy for any one member of Congress to have laws enacted to suit all of his or her policy priorities. In fact, very few bills proposed in either the House or the Senate ever become law. This week’s Learning resources help explain just why a fraction of these proposed bills are actually enacted. Therefore, the prioritization of public policy is an extremely important part of the inner workings of the legislative branch.

The process by which those priorities are organized is often the result of compromise, conflict, and outside pressure both from the president and rulings from the federal courts. Continue reading

Women’s Reproductive Rights

Reproductive rights remain a controversial issue, not only in the United States, but in many countries around the world. Although formal laws address this issue at the federal and state levels, it would be shortsighted to view this conversation as occurring only within the hallways of government. In fact, perhaps no issue has galvanized more stakeholders in recent times than reproductive rights. Institutions, religious groups, grassroots organizations, women’s rights organizations, and international bodies such as the United Nations have weighed in on reproductive rights around the world. Cultural Relativism/ Moral Isolationism

Credit: khanacademy.com

In the first paragraph, briefly describe cultural relativism or moral isolationism. Use at least one quote from the required readings somewhere in the body of the paragraph. You may use the quote to support your description, or you may interpret, or even argue against the quote, but you must do something with the quote; in other words, don’t just provide a quote at the top of your post. Then, provide an example — either from current topics in the news such as the removal of Confederate statues, from recent history, or from your own personal life — of a topic that has multiple perspectives rooted in the tradition and beliefs of a particular group(s). Legalization of Marijuana

Substance abusers are more likely to commit crimes, be arrested, serve time in prison, and re-offend. They are a considerable burden on the justice system, and the problem of substance abuse continues to grow. Why are some states choosing to legalize recreational marijuana, and what effects are being seen from this legalization? What do you believe are potential pitfalls of such legalization given the current rates of rising addiction, and recent research identifying unintended consequences? Continue reading

Decide on a company to invest in and a company in the same industry to compare against your investment company.  Create your group’s company thread.  Click on Create Thread and then list your primary company and comparison company in the subject line.  You will reply to this thread for all future posts.  Only one member of your group will create this group thread.  Example:  Based on the above example of Home Depot vs.   Lowes, your group’s initial thread subject line would read Home Depot vs.   Lowes.  Once you have identified your investment and comparison companies, record them on the board.  The first group who records the companies on the board is the group that can use the companies for their project.  No two groups can use the same companies for this project.   Continue reading

Race

Credit: imdb.com

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to apply the sociological imagination and key course concepts to the assigned video (Race). You will choose your own sociological topic and apply it to Race. This will require a well-articulated thesis statement with ample evidence to support your thesis in the form of in-text citations and examples from Race.

Part 1: Watch the assigned film, Race (run time 134 min), while jotting notes (you will turn in these handwritten or typed notes). Recommendations: Instead of taking notes that summarize the film, I recommend jotting sociological themes that you could use for the topic of your paper. You may want to report time stamps for scenes that seem particularly important for your argument as you may want to review a specific scene later. For example, “18 minutes, 20 seconds: gender inequality is depicted when a woman has a job interview for a soccer coach and the interviewee laughs at her and dismisses her before asking all questions on the list.” Continue reading
