The Concepts of Equality & Social Equity

Credit: theinclusionsolution.me

H. George Frederickson, expert in the field of public administration, coined the term “social equity,” which urges public administrators not to view individuals within one environment as the same but instead to view them against a backdrop of social and economic factors before assuming equality.

Ideals of equality and social justice form the basis of political philosophy. However, enforcing principles of equality across society often infringes on the liberal concept of social justice. Tensions within social and political relations have led to the creation of international government and non government organizations that seek to maintain ethical standards of equality throughout the world. These ethical standards allow reasonable individuals to maintain their philosophical differences without jeopardizing the greater good of global society. Continue reading

The Legislative Branch in Action

Credit: slideshare.net

The senators and representatives who make up the legislative branch each have different agendas, priorities, and policy initiatives that they wish to usher through the public policy process. It is clearly not easy for any one member of Congress to have laws enacted to suit all of his or her policy priorities. In fact, very few bills proposed in either the House or the Senate ever become law. This week’s Learning resources help explain just why a fraction of these proposed bills are actually enacted. Therefore, the prioritization of public policy is an extremely important part of the inner workings of the legislative branch.

The process by which those priorities are organized is often the result of compromise, conflict, and outside pressure both from the president and rulings from the federal courts. Continue reading

Balanced Federal Budgets

Economists differ in their ideas about using government spending to stimulate the economy. Some economists follow British political-economist John Maynard Keynes in advocating increased government expenditure to stimulate the economy when it is in recession. In their view, the federal deficit will decline when the economy improves. Others favor allowing market forces to restore equilibrium when the economy is in recession. They believe that the deficit stifles economic growth and prosperity. Continue reading

Credit: imdb.com

Purpose: The purpose of this assignment is to apply the sociological imagination and key course concepts to the assigned video (Race). You will choose your own sociological topic and apply it to Race. This will require a well-articulated thesis statement with ample evidence to support your thesis in the form of in-text citations and examples from Race.

Part 1: Watch the assigned film, Race (run time 134 min), while jotting notes (you will turn in these handwritten or typed notes). Recommendations: Instead of taking notes that summarize the film, I recommend jotting sociological themes that you could use for the topic of your paper. You may want to report time stamps for scenes that seem particularly important for your argument as you may want to review a specific scene later. For example, “18 minutes, 20 seconds: gender inequality is depicted when a woman has a job interview for a soccer coach and the interviewee laughs at her and dismisses her before asking all questions on the list.” Continue reading
