Bondholders generally receive less protections in the documentation of an international bond issue made by a corporate borrower than international commercial banks under the normal syndicated credit agreement for a corporate borrower. Continue reading

The judgment in Stack v Dowden [2007] UKHL 17 came amidst much criticism about the uncertainty which faces unmarried couples upon the breakdown of their relationship. The case establishes a new framework within which future cases about cohabitants’ rights are to be decided, which it is suggested will lead to greater certainty and simplicity. Critically assess the impact of Stack v Dowden in the light of case law decided both before it and afterwards. Continue reading
Sarah Polley’s film adaption Away from Her represents healthcare issues through the marriage of Fiona and Grant. Critically reflect upon the represented issues in the film and/or Munro’s story and write a research paper (four to five pages) based on ONE of the following topics:
Is Grant’s decision of taking Fiona to an assisted living facility suitable for her conditions? How does the decision reveal about their marriage or love relationship?
Compare and/or contrast the scenes that depict Fiona’s progression of Alzheimer’s disease in Away from Her with those in “The Bear Came over the Mountain.” What element of Munro’s story is missing or dramatized in the film adaptation? Why? Continue reading

H. George Frederickson, expert in the field of public administration, coined the term “social equity,” which urges public administrators not to view individuals within one environment as the same but instead to view them against a backdrop of social and economic factors before assuming equality.
Ideals of equality and social justice form the basis of political philosophy. However, enforcing principles of equality across society often infringes on the liberal concept of social justice. Tensions within social and political relations have led to the creation of international government and non government organizations that seek to maintain ethical standards of equality throughout the world. These ethical standards allow reasonable individuals to maintain their philosophical differences without jeopardizing the greater good of global society. Continue reading
There are more media choices available today to ordinary citizens than ever before. In fact, in the United States and in many other nations, citizens are dramatically decreasing the amount of time spent consuming news through traditional media, such as nightly news broadcasts and daily newspapers. Instead, citizens are dramatically increasing the amount of time spent on a vast array of alternative news resources. Therefore, media outlets—whether on television, in print, or on the Internet—need to digest often-complex policy issues into small snippets that can be understood and communicated in a short amount of time.

The senators and representatives who make up the legislative branch each have different agendas, priorities, and policy initiatives that they wish to usher through the public policy process. It is clearly not easy for any one member of Congress to have laws enacted to suit all of his or her policy priorities. In fact, very few bills proposed in either the House or the Senate ever become law. This week’s Learning resources help explain just why a fraction of these proposed bills are actually enacted. Therefore, the prioritization of public policy is an extremely important part of the inner workings of the legislative branch.
The process by which those priorities are organized is often the result of compromise, conflict, and outside pressure both from the president and rulings from the federal courts. Continue reading
Reproductive rights remain a controversial issue, not only in the United States, but in many countries around the world. Although formal laws address this issue at the federal and state levels, it would be shortsighted to view this conversation as occurring only within the hallways of government. In fact, perhaps no issue has galvanized more stakeholders in recent times than reproductive rights. Institutions, religious groups, grassroots organizations, women’s rights organizations, and international bodies such as the United Nations have weighed in on reproductive rights around the world.
