In this assignment you will be required to present on a topic of a particular food dish of your choice. The presentations will be 10 minutes long and should be done in groups of 3 with all group members participating in the presentation. Students are also required to prepare a sample of the dish for fellow classmates to enjoy.

The two themes of our textbook are food and sustainability which tie into this presentation. For the presentation you must present information on the cultural significance of the dish as well as a sustainability issue surrounding the dish or one of the ingredients. The sustainability issue can relate to cultural, environmental or economic sustainability. For example, one could examine how an ingredient used in the dish has become difficult to obtain due to its increased cost and the reasons for this. Alternatively, one could consider the way that climate change is making it difficult to grow one or more of the ingredients, therefore connecting it to the issue of environmental sustainability.

You are required to conduct research for the sustainability section of the presentation, but not for the cultural aspect of the presentation as you may speak from your own experience and knowledge of the dish and its cultural significance. You should therefore choose a dish you are knowledgeable on and can draw from your own experience making and/or eating the dish. When researching the sustainability element of the presentation make sure to use at least two academic sources. Never use an un-authored source. I would recommend using the Camosun library’s advanced single search which will allow you to search within all the library’s databases.

You are also required to prepare the dish to share with the class on the day of the presentation. Please do not prepare a large amount. The project is not meant to cost a lot of money. Prepare enough so that everyone who wishes to sample it may do so.

Tips for a Good Presentation

Practice, practice, practice! The more you practice the less nervous you will feel and the better the presentation will go. If you cannot memorize your presentation, prepare flashcards for yourself. Position yourself facing the audience and try to make eye contact. Think about pace and volume. Don’t rush through the content and speak in an expressive and articulate manner. Enjoy what you are doing! The audience will be more engaged if you are engaged.
