In this activity, you are going to experience what it may be like to have to function without your vision.
Please keep in mind that the activity you are going to do is just one very small glimpse into sensory impairment and is in no way a comprehensive representation of the challenges that students with a sensory impairment may face.
You will need someone to help you with this activity.
You will need to do the following:
1. Have your helper click on one of the picture links below while you are facing away from the computer (Do NOT click on it yourself!!!)
2. Have your helper describe the picture to you.
3. While listening to the description, form a mental image of picture.
4. When your helper is finished describing the image, turn around and look at the picture yourself. Compare your mental image of the picture to the actual picture.
Pictures (It doesn’t matter which one you choose):
Once you have done this, respond to the following questions:
1. Describe what it was like for you to try to complete the activity?
2. Did your mental image match the actual picture? Why or why not?
3. How would it change your experience if you didn’t have visual references? In other words, what if you had never seen common objects clearly (dog, mountain, car, the color green, etc. etc. etc.)?
4. What are some things that could be done in the classroom to help a child with visual impairments to have access to all of the important information that they need to be successful?
