Metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases are important causes of morbidity and mortality among patients with severe mental illnesses. Atypical or second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) are associated with obesity and other components of metabolic syndrome, particularly abnormal glucose and lipid metabolism. With reference to recent academic literature and clinical practice, describe both the wanted and unwanted effects of second generation, atypical anti-psychotic medications (SGA’s).
Critically discuss the mental health nursing role in assessing and monitoring a service user’s/tangata whaiora’s physical health. Within the discussion include pre-existing risk factors, for example, smoking history and family history of heart disease. Describe informed consent and non-maleficence specifically in relation to administering second generation antipsychotic medication, including enforced treatment under the Mental Health Act.
