Evaluation of Nutritional SupplementPaper instructions:

Assignment instructions:
-You are a scientist working for the Food and Drug Administration. You are charged with assessing the effectiveness and safety of the supplement (approved by your instructor).

-You will prepare a report on the supplement, providing key information of ingredients (active and inactive), present published research on active ingredients and their effects, discus the safety record and health claims.  Finally, based upon the results of your research, you will recommend if the supplement should be allowed to be sold on the market or not.
-Identify a research article which you feel addresses either the effectiveness or the safety of the supplement. (You may use either the JSTOR data base previously used, Google Scholar (http://scholar.google.com/ ) or PUBMED ( http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed ).  If you use PUBMED under text availability select free full text).  Whichever method you use to identify research articles do not purchase an article for this course!  Look for articles with public access to the full text.
-State the specific question the authors of the article are addressing.
-Formulate and state the hypothesis the experiment described in the article addresses.
-Describe the experiment reported in the article being sure to explain the experimental design, materials used, methods used and the controls described in the article.
-Select a key experimental result reported in the article that the experiment you have described produced.  Describe this result and state your conclusion as to whether this data supports or refutes the hypothesis the experiment is testing.
-Consider calcium as a dietary supplement.  Describe how the experiment design, described in point 5 above, could or could not be used to evaluate calcium’s effectiveness as a dietary supplement.
-Describe the supplement, both the active and inactive ingredients.  Look for additional independent research evaluating effects of the product or similar supplements, or the main ingredient (if available). You may include personal experiences in addition to results of research studies.
-Evaluate the information (data) you collected and develop a conclusion, based upon the data you have collected, regarding health effects of the supplement, information from the manufacturer, and a cost-benefit analysis as well as a brief risk assessment.
-Will you recommend or reject this supplement based on the evidence you have identified? What other research about the product should be done to strengthen your recommendation?
-List references in APA format.
-The report should have an Introduction (to cover information under 1,2 and 3), Methods (4), Results (5), Discussion and Conclusion (5 and 6) and References (7).
